The Play
The gist of the story of Rudali is that the central character is Sanichari. Who got this name because he was born on a Saturday and got some decorations along with it – the society believes that he is Asguni and hence no one in his family survived. One by one everyone has been gifted by time. But Sanichari’s eyes never became moist. She never cried, not even when her son died. But eventually she has to work as a Rudali, Rudali means a hired woman who weeps, mourns by taking hard work. Sanichari as a character represents that class. Having no freedom of choice, no means of determination But she never breaks, her life is equally with her. Underlining the ironic irony of women’s life in the lower class of the society, this play is a complete drama even at the level of craft.
Director’s Note
“Rudaali Pratha, also known as the “rudaali tradition,” is a unique and culturally significant practice that originated in the state of Rajasthan, India. The term “rudaali” refers to a professional mourner, usually a woman, who is hired to express grief and sorrow during funerals and mourning ceremonies In Rajasthan, particularly in rural areas, it has been a long-standing tradition to hire rudaalis to mourn and lament the loss of a loved one. These women are skilled in expressing emotions through singing and weeping, and their presence is believed to help the grieving family members release their emotions and grief. The practice of hiring rudaalis is deeply rooted in the belief that openly displaying grief and sorrow during funerals is cathartic and can provide comfort to those mourning the deceased.”
